Clint Smith is the Chief Legal Officer of Discord, where he leads the company's Legal, Policy, Safety, and Security teams. He previously served as General Counsel at two successful open source software companies: DataStax, developer of the Apache Cassandra distributed database, and MySQL, the open source relational database company acquired by Sun Microsystems. He began his career practicing technology law at Steptoe & Johnson in Washington, DC.
A frequent speaker on intellectual property law and open source software, Clint is a lecturer at Stanford Law School where he teaches a course on open source software law, business, and innovation. He has also lectured on U.S. IP law at ETH Zurich's IP management graduate program. Clint is an active advisor and investor in open source, security, and AI companies, and serves on the board of directors of the Digital Trust & Safety Partnership.
